THE PLEASURE OF MAKING

BEAUTIFUL FUNCTIONAL OBJECTS

JOJO CORVÄIÁ WABI·SABI CERAMICS WORKSHOPS are a series of intimate ceramic courses given by the artist Jojo Corväiá to a group no larger than 4 attendees, with the intention to create pieces of domestic use with a WABI·SABI aesthetic value.

In these courses the students learn how to use their hands as fundamental tools to create a body of work that relates directly to their every day experiences.  All pieces are completely hand built, without electric wheel.

CERAMIC  WORKSHOP

THE WABI·SABI WORKSHOP is a basic ceramic program designed to work on specific objects deeply related to our daily life, objects connected to what we are and how we live.

The ceramics in this class embody the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi·Sabi. Wabi can be translated as "tranquil and simple" and Sabi as "patina or character," referring to the beauty that comes with age and the wear of daily use. This  Japanese ideal dates from the late XVI century, revealing the long history and continued vitality of its trajectory.

The value of creating these objects by hand adds a personal state of mind that brings a sense of accomplishment in a meditative manner.

Whether you have artistic abilities or not, together we will learn how to use our hands as fundamental tools to build a collection of pieces that you will be happy to use every day.

THE WABI·SABI WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES are both developing a personal language of expression , and creating a set of objects that can be used on daily basis.

The goal of each course is to comprehend the possibilities and limitations of the material, to set a state of mind that allows us to be focused and present, to concentrate, and work only with our hands.

Each course encourages your personal aesthetic, without any judgment, in a practical and intellectual manner.

At the end of the course, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for this discipline, since we will cover some history, review the work of selected artists and study our own future possibilities. Additionally, you will take with you a priceless set of Bakeware, Serving Dishes and Side Dishes made by yourself.

My projects and thematic research in ceramics gravitate towards the concept of imperfection, asymmetry and modesty.

Aspects of my work include roughness, irregularity and appreciation for the natural process of expression.

In that sense, I recognize and adopt the anomalies arising from the practice of hand-building, which add uniqueness, beauty and a particular character to my work.

My main tools are my hands, no electric wheel. I create my pieces with an old method of production that goes back to the X Century B.C.

And this gives me the opportunity to get intimate with the material.

With my ceramic work, I intent to relate to a perception that transcends appearance, and to rather enters into the territory of feelings.
